Franz-Neumann-Platz, Berlin
Embedded in the dense urban space and still of great importance as an open space – two worlds converge at Franz-Neumann-Platz: urban life meets light shadow play. Plain and high-quality pavement integrates the square into the surrounding urban space and forms a nearly seamless link to the green spaces around the Schäfersee lake. Two slightly raised planting areas developed from the existing structure separate the square from traffic. Inviting and openly designed entrances connect the edge to the centre. The loose, partly dense tree population will be carefully supplemented and further developed. A shaded area “under the cover of trees” merges into the open promenade with south-west exposure in front of the development. The open centre of the square becomes an urban stage, accentuated by the fountain, which is fitted flatly into the relief.
