Bahnbogen Leutzsch, Leipzig
The wasteland of the Leipzig-Leutzsch railway arch, which is currently set back and remote, will be developed into a liveable, well-connected and climate-adapted urban quarter. The area to the west with the transition to the new S-Bahn station and the new tram stop will be further developed as a neighbourhood centre with a wide range of mobility options. The valuable historical stock of buildings and vegetation structures on parts of the site will be taken up and integrated into the overall concept as a significant, identity-forming and urban-climatically effective building block. Diverse and interplaying utilisation modules, housing, social facilities and educational buildings are planned. The structure of the buildings is orientated towards the grain of the surrounding buildings. These are complemented by a high proportion of open space throughout the neighbourhood. The edges of the buildings are deliberately designed to provide noise protection and a spatial setting for a sequence of new urban and neighbourhood squares. The new innovation campus on the site of the historic tram station forms the structural prelude to the new extensively designed neighbourhood park.
