Solitude-Promenade, Basel / Switzerland
The multi-layered history of the valuable and diverse stock along the banks of the Rhine between Stachelrain and Schwarzwaldbrücke is the starting point for the development of the concept for the open spaces of the Solitude-Promenade. The individual layers of time are components of an impressive overall picture. Only a few new ingredients are needed for the future - there is already a great surplus value in the careful fitting and further development of the promenade.
The promenade is precisely integrated into the topographical and vegetation along the banks of the Rhine: somewhat more slender than perhaps desired, but respectful and cautious of the existing values. Like pearls, smaller and larger squares are lined up along the linear promenade. They accentuate and mediate the transitions to the surroundings - creating special places on the Rhine. Based on the classification as a nature conservation zone, the access points to the riverbanks are localised and qualified on the basis of the existing situation. Large parts of the embankment will remain or become biotope development areas. The dense vegetation on the embankments will be thinned out in favour of a higher ecological value in the dry and warm areas. In future, the Solitude promenade will offer largely uninterrupted views of the Rhine and St Alban's opposite. Flowing transitions will also be created to the Solitude Park and the southern Roche site - together they will form an ensemble in future.
