Urban District Hildener Straße, Düsseldorf
The site of the former steelworks, located on main roads, is currently an inaccessible urban space in Benrath. In the long term, the industrial area is to be developed into a multifaceted urban quarter that will link up with the peripheral residential areas and open spaces. The planned quarter consists of five urban building blocks and these will be connected by a main development road running in a north-southerly direction. A district park connects to the adjacent landscape conservation area on the Itter waterway and strengthens the open-space connection to the east. The distance to the motorway as well as partly dense tree plantations create an acoustically and visually effective contribution to noise control in the neighbourhood. A tree-lined park promenade references and reflects the paths from the quarter and offers a high quality of stay at the interface to the open park meadow. Plant filters integrated into the park clean the surface water from the neighbourhood. The purified water can be partly experienced as a large shallow play of water. Supplemented by a pavilion, it offers an appealing haven and magnet in the park.
